Blog

Blogging is the fashionable thing to do at the moment. It's also rather fun. In case you didn't know, we too are launching a blog. We're going to call it Village Voice. It'll be a bit like our news, except we'll post things here every week, as and when we think of it.

Each member of the Village Drinks Team has a proper day job. Some of us work in an office; others work in retail! Some of us are bankers, others are lobbyists.

With all that experience, we hope we've got a couple of interesting things to say about life. And if you don't agree with us, you can call us Sandra.

Go on - we dare you!

A Sunday Gay Event !

We at Village Drinks are delighted to be working with the team at the Sunday Social to help launch and deliver a fantastic new networking event specific to Sundays in London!

We wanted to get involved with this because frankly, our own events are only ever mid-week. The Sunday Social is something different for those who fancy a weekend rest, a chat, some good music, food, and the papers. Add to this the luxuries of hot food, table service, papers and games and you get the idea.
The very first event is happening at The Green Carnation, SoHo: 5pm till 11pm on Sunday 25 November.

If you

Harry Potter - JK Rowling announces - Headmaster of Hogwarts School is “gay”

So, news from the wire tells us that the Headmaster of Hogwarts School is gay. The most successful author of modern times, JK Rowling, described her seven-book saga as a “prolonged argument for tolerance.” Her shock announcement was greeted by applause and gasps of amazement from her audience. We at Village Drinks are firmly of the view that this is a positive announcement which will ring out with a note of hope and encouragement to the many children across the country who are bullied at school with homophobic attacks.Well done JK, and thank you!

Mayor of London Endorses Gay Networking Website

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, has congratulated Village Drinks “for establishing itself as a key social and professional network for lesbian and gay Londoners over the past two years.” In a written statement of support for our group, he writes: “Professional social networks such as Village Drinks unite communities, break down stereotypes, and open up opportunities for lesbian and gay Londoners.”

Naturally, we’re delighted by these kind words; but we’re not resting on our laurels. We think that we could do things a bit better than we currently do; so keep watching our event line up to see what we have in store.

Whatever may be said of the Mayor - and his politics - we think his administration has also done a huge amount to help ensure that London retains its reputation as a welcoming and safe place for lesbian and gay people to live in and visit. This includes for example, setting up the UK’s first Partnership Register in 2001, which paved the way for the 2004 Civil Partnership Act; successfully lobbying for new anti-discrimination laws to protect the LGBT community; and banning ads for holiday resorts that discriminated against lesbian and gay people, forcing them to change their policies.

Gay Rights: A lot done, much more to do

We at Village Drinks are not political activists. But as Channel 4 last week runs a series of documentaries and dramas to mark the 40th year anniversary of the 1967 Homosexual Reform Act being passed, decriminalizing homosexual acts in private between two adult men aged 21 and over, we on the Village Drinks team were tempted to ask, “what more is there to do?” Where next for gay rights campaigns?

Let no one be under any illusion
